303. Maison Montruf

Very luxurious holiday home with heated private pool and amazing views

Peyzac-le-Moustier, Perigord Noir (Dordogne)

Maison Montruf is a beautiful holiday home in the Dordogne for 8 people with heated pool. The house has been lovingly restored and is ideally suited for large families or friendship groups. There are 4 spacious bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. Maison Montruf is located in a small hamlet of Peyzac Le Moustier that overlooks the valley of the Vézère River.

Maison Montruf is a very luxurious holiday home and is fully equipped to a very high standard and is now exclusively for rent for a limited period in the summer. The house is located at the end of a short lane and the automatic gates give access to the property which is private and secured.
The kitchen (40 m2) is fully equipped including a cook island with modern German appliances (induction hob, indoor grill, large oven and microwave) that allows you to turn the great local produce into fantastic meals. The built-in dishwasher then makes cleaning up easy. The kitchen patio is planted with a wide selection of fresh herbs for your use and we will provide you with some pantry supplies. The Delonghi coffee machine will provide you with that delicious coffee to complement your morning croissant.

The large kitchen table seats 8 and is just one of 4 dining tables to choose from, the remaining 3 are outside, the closest of which is on the gallery terrace.
Maison Montruf has two sitting rooms, the upper lounge is next to the kitchen. Featuring red leather chesterfield sofas, UK smart TV with Netflix and DVD player and wireless Sonos system (there are 5 Sonos speakers in the house). The downstairs salon is a wonderfully cool room with French doors to the garden. It has two large sofas, bookcase, TV monitor, DVD player, DVD and book library, and games console. There is also a desk in case you can't quite escape those business emails or video calls (there are 5 wireless access points in the house to guarantee Wi-Fi coverage despite the thick walls). You enter the lounge from the games room which has a large pool table.
Maison Montruf has 4 bedrooms.
Bedroom 1 is the master suite and is located on the ground floor. Originally the kitchen of one of the houses, it has a large fireplace and an old stone sink, as well as a painted arched window. A super king-size bed, separate dressing room and ensuite with walk-in shower and roll-top bath complete the master suite.
Bedroom 2 and 3 are on the 1st floor and both have beamed ceilings with chandeliers and en-suite shower rooms. Bedroom 2 has twin beds and bedroom 3 has a king size bed. There is also an additional family shower on this floor.
Bedroom 4 is also on the ground floor. It has a large fireplace and a private entrance to the lower garden. This bedroom also has a large ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower.

The pigeonnier is located just off the kitchen and contains the wardrobe, toilet and a ladder that gives access to a small balcony where you have a beautiful view over the valley and the garden. Here you can sit with 2 people and enjoy reading a book or the sunset.

Outside there is a large heated private salt water swimming pool of 12 x 5 meters with a safety cover and a sun terrace with views over the Vézère valley. The terrace with retractable awning is located off the kitchen and overlooks the pool and garden. It is a great place to have lunch or breakfast. The other dining tables are in the garden, one terrace is covered in the open barn and the other on the lawn near the ruin. The utility room, with direct access to the pool, houses a washing machine, tumble dryer and above all a wine cooler / drinks fridge, because after all you are on vacation. The 1 hectare garden is fully secured (to keep out the wildlife). The pool has plenty of sun loungers, chairs and umbrellas, making it an ideal place to spend the day.

As Maison Montruf is located on a west-facing hill, the garden has some fantastic views. It is also a haven for birds and insects, some birds nest in the walls of the house and barn, others in the trees in the undergrowth and numerous insects feed on the lavender plants that grow so well here in France. If you are lucky you will hear a Golden Oriel, you will certainly hear the Nuthatches and Woodpeckers that live locally. You can also see small lizards basking on the walls in the garden. The site also contains ruins of the original village. The classroom of the old school building is an ideal place for the table tennis table.

Your hosts Paul & Charlotte live on site in an on-site lodge with their two Flat Coated Retrievers. They are on hand if needed, can answer all your questions and provide concierge services if needed.

I would recommend it to everyone! There is no better place to relax!

The village of St Léon sur Vézère is just 3 km away and offers a wide choice of restaurants, from riverside cafes to fine dining. Fresh bread and pastries, an important part of any French holiday, are less than 5 minutes away by car. Many activities are possible here in the Dordogne. Here are just a few ideas and if there is something in particular that interests you we can provide you with more detailed information prior to your stay.

There are a number of targeted walks in the area you can take or you can just get out the back gate. Or simply follow the path to St Léon for a coffee or an ice cream. Alternatively, you can go hiking in Montignac with a donkey that will carry your bags or your young child. This is also a great area for road or VTT cycling. Electric bikes are available for hire in Montignac or Rouffignac for those who don't like steep hills. There are many companies that offer canoeing on the Vézère or the Dordogne and it is therefore easy to find one that suits your needs. There are a number of riding schools nearby that offer horseback riding and we are not far from a number of golf courses. There are water parks, escape rooms, aquariums and evening spectacles, as well as hot air balloon, microlite and helicopter tours for those who want to see the world from a different angle.

We were lucky enough to spend some time here in Summer 2019. A wonderful setting, a delightful ambience and a simply unforgettable experience. Highly recommended.

I will preface this review by saying that this place is owned and run by my mother and step-father, and as such may be slightly biased, however I have been many times and wanted to leave a review to give some insight for those that have never been.
Most recently my fiancé and I were lucky enough to get out to Maison MontRuf during the middle of the Covid Pandemic. We both have stressful jobs working in government and VERY much needed some time for some R&R this summer.
I really could not think of a better place to take some time out of the rat race and relax. The house is always impressive to drive up to, and feels private with its large enclosed garden and meadow. We took plenty of time to relax by the pool, read books and take the occasional trip to some of the near by villages and historical attractions.
The pool is perfect for cooling down during the middle of the day and is heated meaning that you can swim all the way into the evening, watching the sun set in the valley with a gin and tonic. Even in the rural setting there is WiFi so you can make sure that you can download more books to the kindle, or watch Netflix in the evening if the gin and tonics have rendered one useless at trivial pursuit or playing pool in the games room.
The beds are comfy and resulted in an inability to stay awake for longer than 10 minutes after climbing into, and meant we always woke up feeling refreshed and ready to stumble into the kitchen for croissants collected from the local bakery that morning.
In the evenings you can cook in the open plan kitchen while still socialising, or make use of the gas BBQ and outside dining area, (a real treat to cook with an amazing view - and I think I did alright with the steaks if I say so myself)
I have been lucky enough to see all the hard work Paul and Charlotte have put in but know that guests will not have needed to see this first hand to appreciate what an amazing place they have created.
I would recommend staying there to anyone and couldn’t imagine a better place to relax.
